Grayson Capps is a beloved Alabama-based troubadour whose songwriting draws deeply from the folk traditions that shaped his musical life.

His seventh studio album, Heartbreak, Misery & Death, explores sixteen long-lost folk songs and traditionals performed by artists ranging from Doc Watson and Jerry Jeff Walker to Randy Newman and Gordon Lightfoot. These songs were introduced to Capps as a child by his father and played a formative role in his love for music.

Growing up surrounded by music, Capps remembers hearing Fred Stokes, Bobby Long, and his father Ronnie Capps singing around the house on weekends, as well as listening to vinyl records in the den. Artists like Doc Watson were among the first that deeply influenced him, shaping how he first found his voice as a singer and guitarist.

The songs in this collection reflect those early memories and influences. Many explore themes of heartbreak, loss, and longing: timeless subjects that have long lived at the heart of folk music.

Together, they trace the musical roots that helped shape the voice and storytelling that define Grayson Capps’ work.
